$2.2 Billion in Tax Relief on the Way for Nearly 3 Million New Yorkers

The STAR program is delivering another round of property tax relief across New York, with nearly $2.2 billion earmarked for close to 3 million homeowners.

  1. In Phase 1, benefits went out to eligible recipients with school tax bills due in June and July.

  2. Now in Phase 2, payments are reaching homeowners whose tax deadlines fall between August and October.

The rollout will continue through the fall, timed to align with local school district schedules.

While some recipients are seeing STAR as a direct exemption on their property tax bills, others will receive refund checks by mail.

Right now, the circulating question is: how much can you expect from the STAR program’s second phase?

Governor Kathy Hochul has confirmed that phase two of the School Tax Relief (STAR) program is now underway, delivering property tax relief to eligible homeowners just in time for upcoming school tax deadlines.

These payments are part of a larger effort to reduce the burden on New York families amid rising costs and economic uncertainty.

Who’s Getting Payments in Phase Two?

Phase two targets homeowners in areas where school tax bills are due in August or September.

If that’s your area, you could be receiving your payment in the coming weeks.

According to state officials, 320,000 residents in Western New York alone will benefit during this phase.

How Much Will You Receive?

It depends on your eligibility:

  • Homeowners: $350 to $600

  • Seniors (Enhanced STAR): $700 to $1,500

The exact amount varies based on local tax rates and eligibility criteria.

When Will STAR Payments Be Sent?

Payments are distributed on a rolling basis depending on your school district’s tax due date.

If your taxes are due in August or September, expect your STAR payment soon — either by mail or as a credit on your tax bill.
